About the project

Prudent antibiotic use and strategies to prevent antimicrobial resistance

Why we are doing this project

The overuse of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance are listed among the greatest global threats to health and life. Promoting behaviors that prevent infections and ensure appropriate use of antibiotics is crucial, only when they are truly necessary.

Poland is one of the highest consumers of antibiotics in Europe. The proposed research will contribute to addressing this major public health issue. A research team from SWPS University will develop a report that will serve as a foundation for planning further interventions aimed at preventing the overuse of antibiotics in primary health care.

Project aims

Our aim is to develop and implement strategies to help optimize antibiotic prescribing and use in primary care in Poland, and consequently help prevent antibiotic resistance.

To achieve this, we draw on methodologies and theories from health psychology, behavioral medicine, and implementation science. Our objectives are to:

  • Understand the factors influencing antibiotic use in Poland;
  • Analyze interventions (e.g., programs, strategies) related to antibiotics and antibiotic resistance;
  • Create a foundation of evidence for the development and implementation of strategies to help reduce the risk of infections, antibiotic overuse, and the development of antibiotic resistance in primary health care.

Methodology

The program will include the following research activities:

  • Conducting surveys and qualitative studies to identify key behaviors and behavioral, social, and systemic influences on antibiotic use;
  • Systematic literature reviews and evidence syntheses on the drivers of antibiotic use and interventions (e.g., programs, strategies, campaigns) implemented in Poland and other countries;
  • Identifying priority interventions for study and implementation to promote prudent antibiotic use in Polish primary health care;
  • Establishing a network of stakeholders and experts to shape implementation research on antibiotic use and resistance in Poland.

Funding

The project is co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange within Polish Returns Programme (ref. BPN/PPO/2023/1/00005/DEC/1) and the Polish National Science Centre (ref. 2024/03/1/HS6/00006).
